Have you ever been bungee jumping? You should, it's fun! If you are unfamiliar with the concept it is simply a giant rubber band fastened to your ankles that facilitates your surviving great leaps off tall bridges. As you can well imagine, if YOU were standing on a bridge hundreds of feet above a treacherous gorge, about to plummet your life away, fastened only by a giant elasticized rope, you might be a wee bit fearful. You're only faith and/or hopes would be pinned on the Strength of Stretch! Will this rubbery band SNAP? Have faith, it will stretch and be strong! You may already have a sense of the parallel that I am about to draw here... ...Your muscles are beautifully stretchy rubber bands! ONLY BETTER... because they are connected to a BRAIN (yours). Therein lies the rub...The muscle/brain connection.

The neuro-pathway from your brain to your muscles is a good thing because it's a "smart" connection. But it can also hinder you when attempting new things like Bakasana, the Crow pose. The connection has an automatic braking system (ABS) which is mostly tied into memories and past experiences... What would happen if you fastened your bungee cord and took a happy leap off a bridge and suddenly,in mid-flight, the bungee cord got "smart" and tightened all of it's rubbery fibers? OBVIOUSLY, it would SNAP! or at least make you very uncomfortable. It may be better that bungee cords ARE brainless but the smartness of your muscles can be used to your benefit...If you have faith in the Strength of Stretch!

DON'T TIGHTEN! It is possible to program your muscles to relax to their full length while performing dynamic movements. You can have better performance in any activity of daily life as a result of an increase in the range of motion of your joints and new found dynamic strength. One key element of bungeeness is the ability to hold weight in a stretched position. When muscles find new stretchability other muscles that you may not have known existed become more active. The benefit...the REASON for it ALL is: GREATER MUSCLE RECRUITMENT or more muscle usability...hence GREATER STRENGTH! You may use the Strength of Stretch in any activity: running, shopping, stair climbing or simply to more comfortably inhabit your own body. So get stretching and find the Strength at a Yoga class near you! (see below for one option) Friday night YOGA at River Light Wellness Center! start time...5:59pm 107 Wilcox Road, Stonington CT. .............................................
